A car battery is one of those critical components in a car that most people just forget because "out of sight, out of mind". Fortunately, our batteries allowed you to forget about them. However, it is still necessary to remember some simple rules to get long service life and maximum benefit out of your batteries.
1. Good quality car batteries last 3-5 years. When it reached 4 years old, get it replace as soon as you can.
A four year old car battery can " drop dead " without any warning. Don't let that happen to you. It's not nice to get stranded on the road during hot summer or cold winter time. Even during nice autumn or spring time, you don't want to get stranded when the old battery suddenly unable to start your car and causes unnecessary inconvenience to you, for example, being late for your first date or a job interview.
2. Choose the correct size and type of battery for your car or application. Consult car battery dealer or technician for advice.
3. Do not modify any part of your battery, for example cut or drill terminal posts. A battery can be hazardous if strict precautions are not followed. If you are not familiar with fitting a car battery, get an automotive battery technician to assist you.
4. Be aware when using Lead / Acid / Gel / AGM batteries in constant extreme condition where high temperature (>50C) and vibration are present. Not all automotive batteries are designed for such condition. Using the wrong battery type in this condition will shorten the battery's service life significantly and possibly cause explosion. There are some lead acid batteries designed to withstand high heat condition and light vibration. Again it's best to ask car battery service technician for advice.
5. If your car battery electrolyte can be top up, always top up with only distilled water, nothing else. Top up level should be just slightly cover the grey lead-metal parts, don't top up to the top of battery's vent. If the level are too high, acid will creep out from the vent and may causes corrosion to the surroundings car's components.
6. Don't DIY charging your battery if you are not sure of the correct method. Charging a car battery can be hazardous if proper procedure is not followed. But if you do charge your car battery, make sure the area is well ventilated, gases escape from car battery can be dangerous if enough concentration is accumulated.
7. Don't leave your car battery connected without using the car for 3 months or longer. A connected battery will get " flat " or discharged by electronic accessories fitted to the vehicle. Therefore, if you intend to leave the car in the garage for longer than 3 months, isolate the battery. Give periodic top up charge every 3 months if you are not using the vehcle regularly. Storing a flat / discharged car battery for more than 3 months will likely cause permanent damage to the battery. Remember a flat / discharged car battery is not a warranty. There are tests can confirm mis-used or abused that causes premature faiure.
